PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Safe n Lite is a highly specialized product for horses and ponies prone to conditions such as Laminitis, Insulin resistance, Cushing’s disease and/or those which display an intolerance to sugars and starches. Although Safe ‘n Lite is grain free and very low in starch and sugar, ample energy is still available from added super fibres and fats to support horses that are working.
High fibre levels are provided to ensure digestive wellbeing and together with added digestive cultures this product can assist with gut health especially in cases of Colic and Ulcers.
Studies have shown that diets low in NSC (Non-Structural Carbohydrates, which include sugar and starch) are beneficial to horses suffering from conditions such as Laminitis. This low NSC is the key factor in the success of Safe ‘n Lite.
A full range of vitamins and minerals are included to ensure that this product covers the nutritional requirements of the class of horse for which this product is intended. Biotin, manganese, zinc and magnesium which are all essential for healthy hooves and also for increasing growth of the hoof horn to assist in recovery from laminitic conditions, are all provided in correct levels.
*It should be kept in mind that this product will not necessarily cure an acute Laminitic condition or active cases of Insulin resistance, Cushing’s or Gastric Ulcers. The product does, however, assist in preventing these conditions and aid in horses and to aid those with sensitivities to diets with higher levels of sugars and starches, due to its very low NSC level.
In all cases of severe or acute conditions please follow the advice of your veterinary surgeon.
FEEDING GUIDELINES
Safe n Lite should only ever be used to supplement good quality hay and/ or pasture.
To ensure a healthy gut, good quality forage should be provided at 1.5% of bodyweight per day (7.5kg for a 500kg horse) , with an absolute minimum of 1% if calories need to be restricted.
Always ensure the minimum roughage requirement is met and then adjust the amount of feed depending on condition and workload. Meal sizes should preferably be limited to 2kg per feeding.
Depending on the workload, age, condition and quality of the available roughage, the average horse will require between 0.25% and 1% of body weight in Safe n Lite per day (1.25kg -5 kg of concentrate per day) depending on the condition the horse may be suffering from. However please consult with one of our advisors to ensure that the correct amount is being fed.
Mixing in about 20% of water per weight to the Safe n Lite can aid palatability and many horses prefer the concentrate to be damp and crumbly when fed, however its not necessary.
It is very important to ensure that your horse is fed the correct portion of food by weight, not by volume! All feeds have different densities and thus do not weigh the same. Therefore, it is very important to establish exactly what weight (kg) your scoop holds of the specific product you are feeding.
Always introduce any new feed or product over a period of 7-14days and ensure fresh water is always available.
